how beautiful! It's nice to see that there are still places preserved for the herons and other birds right near metropolitan areas :-)

Hear, hear to an appreciation of Jamaica Bay. Regular visits to this unfailingly interesting and lively spot are the reason I became a birding lifer. Great place to tune in to the rhythms of migration, wintering waterfowl, breeding populations, etc.... walk the loop trail there and you're in one of those places where nature is unmistakably in charge, and the Manhattan skyline makes this experience all the more wondrous.
