The Natural Resources Defense Council, Boreal Songbird Initiative and Nature Canada released a great new report on boreal birds and water today. The report is live at with photos, maps and other background: http://www.borealbirds.org/report-birdswater.shtml
The boreal forest of Canada is a critical stronghold of our planet's bird life. Billions of birds migrate to and from the boreal region and reproduce in the short boreal summers, largely because of the region's abundant wetlands and undammed waterways. The report looks at three natural areas in the boreal forest that are critical for birds but that are under pressure from tar sands oil extraction, hydropower and climate change.
Jeff Wells from the Boreal Songbird Initiative has posted a wonderful blog about the issues in the report: http://www.borealbirds.org/blog/?p=922
