As the last mounds of snow slowly melt, leaving the ground somewhat spongy, our new digs are becoming my favorite place to be. We have deer, wild turkey's, pileated woodpeckers, barred owls, wrens and pheasants, as well as all my little bird friends that visit our feeders. I saw the turkey's this morning for the first time, although I've seen their tracks all winter in the snow, I was excited to see them in the flesh. As spring progresses, the trees fill out, I look forward the the arrival of the bluebirds, waxwings, and all their little friends!
After hearing those unmistakable calls in the woods for weeks and weeks, we were thrilled to see the female Pileated found our yard. I've heard their drumming in the woods, that loud, slowish beat that distinguishes them from the other woodpeckers, and that call that sounds tropical. If I'm close enough to a mated pair I can hear the soft, almost purring way they talk to each other.
So, I grabbed my camera, but not wanting to scare her off, I took some photos through the window while my husband ran to the garage to get the new feeder he bought for them.

Thanks Vern, Angela & Ricky!
@Angela, I just got our hummingbird feeder up, so I'm hoping to see one soon. OUr flowers have at least poked through the ground, but that's about it.
