I've got a mockingbird in my yard this winter who drinks from the birdbath and hangs around the feeder.  What can i put out for him to eat?  I've seen them eating rose hips in winter but i don't have…Continue

Feeding frenzy

Our feeders have recently been overrun with pigeons and house sparrows.  The chickadees, titmice, downies, nut hatches, etc. are having a tough time of it, and so are we.  I was told once that if i…Continue

It's quite possible. Unless there is a lot of food, a lot of woodpeckers become rather territorial in winter so they don't have to share.

Hi Laura, thanks to your setting me straight on sexing red bellies, I've been watching this bird very carefully over the past two weeks, and i can say for sure it is a male.  I believe it is always the same individual too, since he always…

I will take a more careful look at how far through the forehead the red nape occurs.  I somehow thought the male's nape extended farther down the neck than the female's so i've probably been paying attention to the wrong…

That's intruiguing. Both male and female have a brilliant red crown and nape. The only difference is in the forehead. In areas where they're not common, often just one bird will have control over a fairly large territory, but it's…

I live in New Jersey.  For a couple of years (since i no longer have outdoor cats) i've been feeding our backyard birds, and for all that time a male red-bellied woodpecker has made daily visits.  I wonder why i never see a female.  Do they separate in the winter?See More

Mockingbirds

I've got a mockingbird in my yard this winter who drinks from the birdbath and hangs around the feeder.  What can i put out for him to eat?  I've seen them eating rose hips in winter but i don't have any roses.  I doubt he'll eat seed, will he?  Thanks for any suggestions.

We recently had a  juvenile Cooper's at our feeders too.  he hung around all day and finally made a pass right through the bunch of pigeons milling about on the ground.  I don't think he was successful.  We were…

I don't know how interesting this is to anyone, but i thought i'd update you all on the pigeon/sparrow wars here in Edgewater.  I got some striped sunflower seed and filled the spring loaded hopper feeder with it.  I also tossed…

I had a recent New York City experience with YBSSs.  I went to the NY Public Library on 42 street this past late October because a prothonotary warbler had been sighted there, enjoying bread crumbs with the house sparrows.  And indeed,…

I do put out suet.  the monk parakeets love it.  And yes, so do the starlings, tho there aren't too many of those yet this year. It's not that the little birds have gone away, but they're struggling to get a bite to…

It's the cakes with seed. It never even occurred to me that it could be the seed. That's why these discussions are so valuable!! :)

Are you setting out pure suet, or suet cakes embedded with seeds?

The House Sparrows who visit my feeders absolutely love the suet. It comes in second after the black oil sunflower.
