After checking with Victor's info on "tricky bird ID's" , I agree and go with young Cooper, based on the chest pattern. These hawks are very hard to id! Beautiful pics Robin!

A little late on the reply, but my first thought was Red-shouldered.  (As a side note, I've never seen a Broad-winged for comparison, but I have seen my share of Red-shouldereds, some of which were a bit variable in plumage.) Larry, your…

Oh, you guy's are amazing! Red-shouldered it is! I sure hope they set up housekeeping. Can't you just see me at sunrise, in my pj's (I live in the woods) with my vanilla late flavored coffee and camera, freezing my butt off, but…

Broad-winged hawks are not back yet.  I am almost certain that these are Red-shouldered.  Very cool to have them so active near you.  This is nesting time for them, so they may be setting up their territory.

Larry, Location is Northern Central New Jersey, right by the New York border. Could very well be Red-shouldered and they are very loud and vocal, repetative, alarm calls maybe??  Or maybe setting up a territory for nesting???  (YAY!) Here…

My first thought was Broad-winged as well, right markings and wing shape.   But "screaming?" that throws me off.

What's your location?   They look like Red-shouldered Hawks to me.  You can see the translucent windows near the wing tips.  Also, Red-shouldered Hawks are very vocal. Do they sound sort of like Blue Jays, only louder?

Hopefully I will start the discussion with broad-winged hawk? I am not so good at flying hawks either.

Flying Hawk

I had two of these flying around, "screaming" and sitting in the tree's most of the day yesterday. Too far away or behind other tree's to make a good ID. My flying hawk skills are almost nil. I am hoping you guy's can pinpoint it for me. Thanks for your help!xp02.19.12%20018a.jpg…See More

Linda I found this on the Stokes Blog, should help pinpoint it for you: http://stokesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/green-morph-pine-siskin.html I see yellow in the undertail coverts, so I would believe it to be a green morph Pine Siskin. Lovly…

My First Feeder Watch

For the first time, I finally signed up for Project Feederwatch. I loved doing the Back Yard Bird Count, for the last few years. I did not thnk I could fit in more time to count birds, but I was wrong. Feederwatch is only 2 consecutive days a week, using any times that I can fit in easily! I chose Sunday and Monday, two days I am off from work. With simple online posting counts, and the whole Feederwatch online information, it becomes enjoyable and fun. I highly recommend that anyone who…
