Baby Hummer begging for food from a bee #34

"It must have been an extremely hard choice to pick 100 photos from the thousands of excellent ones. Hummingbirds are one of my favorites and this captured a wonderful moment and also my vote. How do you vote? Is it by the comment! Great shot."

My very first sighting-Redheaded duck, male+female

"Great shots of the Redheads Vernon and a nice comparison for male and female. They are sort of common in Saskatchewan. Never thought I'd be able to tell one duck from another when starting out a few years ago. The Redheads and Canvasbacks…"

"I believe you are correct in that and would love to get more info on the phenomenon form others on the site. I have witnessed this first-hand a few times with other species, especially the Saw-whet. The Long-eared is a very difficult bird to find…"

Long-eared Owl

"Thanks Denis. I wondered if in this case it was because the sun was shining on the one pupil making it go smaller. First and only Long-eared Owl we have seen."

Long-eared Owl

"Cool shot! Owls are really neat in that they can adjust the pupil size in each eye independantly (and for lots of other reasons too)."

Sorry I took so long to reply, Val, but they were eastern. I would always see them on the ground in some open field. Now that I think about it, there would be Red-winged Blackbirds around when I saw the Meadow Larks. The Red-winged Blackbirds would hang out near the creeks where cattails grew and the Meadow Larks would hang out in the dry, short-grassed areas.

I remember the creeks getting polluted with what seemed to be factory waste that looked like oil and smelled really bad. The fields have all been built over. Those birds, I hope, moved on.

Take care and thanks for the childhood memories of when there were fields and clean water creeks.
