Bird ID
1 Reply

I agree that the hawk photo looks like an adult Cooper's Hawk and the yellow bird photo looks like a Northern Oriole.

Discoverer

Try the Discoverer. I think Bushnell makes it and it is the birders standby scope. I have one that is 30 years old and works fine. A Velnron tripod works fine for the Discoverer and the scope is a…Continue

Parking Lot Partidges and Snow Geese

Two interesting observations this morning:

I observed a flock of 200, or so, Snow Geese flying over, this morning going to northern California,. I usually see snow geese flying back to California around November 5 (the observations going back in Bozeman, Montana over 30 years).Maybe this is conjecture on my part...but the first thing I thought about was that the geese might be responding to climate change????????

Also,

there is a stream behind my…

Hi Matt,
I checked out your blog at naturalistjourney the wordpress blog and found it very interesting. You have done a terrific job reporting the news concerning the oil spill. Reading about your other activities, ideas, and opinions was very interesting also. I look forward to following your future writing.

Matthew,

Welcome to WeLoveBirds.org. This note to you is my first post. I think you would like to know that we, in Texas, share your concerns. I am on the board of the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory. In simple terms, our mission is to try to preserve habitat for migratory birds that visit the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Our main concern is destruction of habitat for building homes and industry around the coast. We partner with other interested parties to educate people about the importance of this habitat and how they can pursue their goals for their land while preserving habitat for birds. Our hope is that the birds you send us in the fall will return to you in good health in the spring.

I am interested in your observations up in Minnesota. It is fabulous weather for birds in Texas today. I hope they enjoy their stay.

I am a bird nut and have been one for a long time.

I really do see that global climate change is horrifically, and I mean horrifically, putting birds you and I really love at risk.

This fall I birded heavily at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory and I can see being lulled into thinking all is well with Raptors because I saw high numbers of certain raptors. It definitely was a warm fall in Duluth, Minnesota and though global climate change is quite subtle at times it seems like an oxymoron that Duluth, Minnesota is a warm place, but the weather at times was steaming hot. There were enough bad days to make you think otherwise.

I have been around birding for about forty years...most of that as a hardcore birder, and just enough time at birding to see change for a variety of reasons in bird populations.

I, like you, enjoy birds for the sake of enjoying birds but I know enough to be hugely concerned about what is happening in places like the hardwoods of Rock Creek Park, the mountain pine beetle ravaged conifers of my area of the Rockies, the Northwoods of Minnesota or the semi-tropical gladelands of South Florida. So nice to be a part of this community, I see the need for it.
Matt
