"You could be right. I sem to see a white blotch on one of the heads in the first picture. They are rare in my area, but that seems to fit the most.  Lets see what e-bird thinks. Thanks! "

I have no clue and bad pictures

I took these pictures off the coast of Washington State on May 6th. In one of the pictures you can see a yellow bill, but for the most pat, all I can see is black blobs. Any help would be much appreciated.…See More

And the Sandhill Cranes are back...

I had arraigned for yesterday to be a birding day for me, so I was disappointed when the instant class let out it started raining.  I headed up to Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge anyway since they have an auto tour route.  I was hoping that I would be able to see something, and I was not disappointed. I think I saw three or four new species and saw more Northern Harriers at close range than I had ever seen before. Anyway, I was trying to get good pictures of Greater white fronted Geese…

Vaux's swifts at Chapman elementary school in Portland OR

Thanks to an article my mother-in-law sent me this morning http://audubonportland.org/local-birding/swiftwatch

she and I went to see this amazing sight this evening.  It was amazing seeing thousands of these swifts flying around and then entering into the chimney for the night.  Aparently this is only a stop…

A slightly embarrassing and exciting moment for me

I was looking through my photos on the computer the other night trying to get them into some sort of order and renaming pictures that I had mis-identified before, or making all the names uniform (like making sure I hadn't left the "American" off of "American Goldfinch") when I came across a photo I had taken last April.  It was taken on one of my "me-time" trips away from home and homework.  My husband had been calling me every 5 minutes to see when I was coming home to help get the kids…

Entertaining episode in the parking lot

I was sitting in my car eating my lunch today when I noticed a European starling walking around in the grass with another bird following it. The bird following looked to be a juvenile and it makes sense since it was following the adult around and begging for food every time the adult found something to eat.  Each time the adult raised its head the juvenile went into the feeding position, head back and beak gaping, and it would chirp.  The adult totally ignored the youngster, and after a while… Continue

Hi Leah. I have no idea whether you will see the reply I posted to your comment on my blog, so I'll jot a note here just to make sure. The Nisqually Wildlife Refuge is stroller friendly, although you have to follow a short trail over an earthen dike to get to the new boardwalk. My recollection is that it wouldn't be a problem. At any rate, the older mile-long Twin Barns Loop Trail is also a boardwalk and takes off directly from the parking lot. We saw the bittern, hooded mergansers, bufflehead and an otter from that very interesting trail. The refuge is just off I-5. Directions here. Entry is $3/vehicle. It can be a little cooler and breezier out at the end of the new boardwalk.
