"Hello Fellow Birder: The stream by D.R. Fitspatrick and Mr. Sarvia (?) is excellent. I must say that I see D.R. Fitspatrick as way more on the right track of feeding. I am a birder and my experience with feeding birds is primarily at nature centers.…"

"There is a documented phenomina in waterfowl known as shortstopping. My thinking is that this phenomina occurs in songbirds. Here is what I think can happen. Songbirds migrate north or south and birds stop over at feeders and eat the food put out…"

Ellen Harris commented on Jon Devine's blog post To feed or not to feed?

"I guess it depends on whether you look at people as part of nature or not. :) I tend to think we ARE part of nature. The birds take advantage of a resource and perhaps their numbers increase because of it. And if enough people have backyard feeders…"

To feed or not to feed?

I'm hoping a scientist out there can give some advice to the unscientific like me -- is it good to feed birds or not? Living in the DC area, I saw some stories encouraging folks to fill their bird feeders or throw out seed for the birds to help them cope with the recent huge snowstorms. From an ecological perspective, is this a good idea? Does helping animals survive that might not otherwise live do harm (keeping populations artificially high, for instance)? Does it make a difference if you…See More
