Information about me.

I am an intermediate level birder, but primarily a nature and wildlife photographer, with birds as my primary subject. My love of nature stems from early childhood, inspired by my mother. I've been into photography since I was 18. Now in my early 50's, I've spent the last few years focusing (no pun intended) on the birds. Behavioral and action shots are what I strive for. I spend countless hours in the field, observing, photographing...and above all, learning.

I live in the Northeast, in New Jersey. I've lived here all my life. New Jersey gets a bad rap. It's a spectacular place for birds. Cape May, Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, Island Beach State Park, Sandy Hook, Great Swamp, Barnegat Light. All amazing places to go and observe birds and shoot. There are 426 Species of birds on the list for possible or previously seen in NJ. I can spend years here trying to find them all. I have done a little traveling, but not as much as I would like to.

One place that is awe-inspiring is to see the hordes of Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam in Maryland. I have been there about a half-dozen times, and am looking forward to the fall when they return. Nothing like being able to see close to 200 Bald Eagles in one spot.

The most amazing place I have been is to Southwest Florida. Sanibel Island, Ding Darling NWR, Corkscrew Swamp in Naples, The Venice Rookery, and the Burrowing Owls in Cape Coral. Just overwhelming. I envy those who live there. I could shoot there for years and never tire of it.

My gear: Canon EOS 7D and EOS 50D. Lenses - Canon L-Series professional, 400mm F5.6, Canon L-Series 300mm F4.0. I shoot all of my work hand held.

Birds to me are the most amazing of creatures. An endless gallery of photos awaits the patient observer.

"I would love to claim that I "planned" this shot. Truth is, I always have my camera set to continuous fire, high speed (8 frames per second). I hit the shutter and about 3 frames fired, just as he decided to take off. ;-)"

Find the extraordinary, in the ordinary.

Everyone of my peers in wildlife photography loves to get "the shot". Some incredible action, or a very rare bird, or some magnificent capture when it all just comes together. I do too. I love the thrill of it, and of seeing nature and the birds in all their splendor.

But there is so much more to see. If only we take the time to look, and to observe, and to learn about the birds (and other animals) we want to capture.

Many of my contemporaries will be looking…

Patience.

Today I went to my favorite spot, the Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, in Oceanville, NJ.

The weather was gorgeous, as I arrived 30 minutes after sunrise. The heat had given way to Northwest breezes, and temperatures below 70 to start the morning. That meant that the nasty greenheads and mosquitoes were in much lesser numbers...and I was grateful for that!.

This refuge is set in the midst of a tidal salt marsh. The birds you can see there are fantastic. But with that…

What the morning may bring.

For me, it is the thrill of what I will see this day. I never know what to expect. I set my alarm for 4AM, and wake to pack my cameras in the car, have some coffee and a light breakfast, and prepare to greet the sun at one of my favorite places.

Maybe today it will be the Forsythe refuge, where the tidal salt marsh and brackish and freshwater impoundments hold an amazing variety of birds. Or off to Barnegat Light in Winter, to see the Harlequin Ducks, the Eiders, the…

Hi Eric.  I made it down to Barnegat on Monday and got my first Harlequin Duck!! Thank you for sharing!  Before we left the house, I googled something about winter birding at Barnegat & got to a site with great photos and commentary.  When I got to the bottom of the page, I found it was a post from you!

Eric, I love the Black Skimmers also, was fortunate to see them nesting in a protected area on Florida's West Coast.  I will post a couple of shots.

Eric,  Got to go to Forsythe for the first time on Friday when I was visiting my friend in Toms River.  What an experience!  It reminded me of the freshwater marsh in my area that I love to visit.  I just started seriously birding this summer, so my life list is not awe-inspiring by any reckoning, but in 3 days, I added 8 new species.  Just wanted to share since it is one of your favorite spots also!

Hi Eric,

The oyster catchers and skimmer are from Nickerson Beach.  It's on the south shore of Long Island.  They have nesting areas roped off for turns, plovers, skimmers and oyster catchers.  I've never been to Cape May although it's on my list of places to go - it's quite a few hours from where I live.  Thanks for asking.
