"LOL! What a surprise.  Glad to know everything turned out ok, except for the mess.  It reminds me of a time that I was driving home from work and a bird flew in my car window.  It was a good thing I was going really slow to begin with…"

Surprise Guests

We store our Christmas paraphernalia in the attic. There are no steps to our attic, a ladder is necessary, which makes the entire process of hoisting up all the boxes even more tiresome. This year there was a most surprising element to this long and tedious job: when we opened the attic hatch, two starlings flew down, into the house!Needless to say, pandemonium ensued: two of our seven cats were hanging around at the time, one right under the ladder – his eyes almost bulged right out of his…See More

The Goldfinch Hotel

Looking out the window I noticed a tiny bundle of feathers in the back yard. It was a goldfinch, huddled in the snow, seemingly unable to move.As I've done so often in the past, out I went with box in hand, to help the forlorn little creature. She didn't move when I approached, yet didn't have any obvious injuries. Most likely she had hit a window and was just stunned. I gently picked up the tiny bird, and placed her in the lidded box which had been lined with towels. I then brought her into…See More

"Wow, your yard and garden sure must be a pretty busy place, cool. I live in southern Ontario and I`ve only had a few birds. A couple of Cardinals(male+female), Black-capped Chickadee, downy Woodpecker and a couple of Mourning Doves. It seems like a…"

Feeder Frenzy

I live in eastern Ontario, and the spring arrivals at my feeders are not always overy abundant, in fact in spring of both '09 and '10, there were hardly any birds, which was very disappointing. However this year is more than making up for the past two, with lots of birds coming and going, keeping the feeders very busy. This spring's cast of avian characters include the redpolls, which are probably my favorites. They don't come every year and we haven't had any in the past few, but this spring we…See More

"I took a trip to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge this past weekend to see the migrating Snow Geese. This east coast refuge is a major stop on the Atlantic Flyway. Wow, it was impressive to see them coming in from the north by the hundreds and…"

Snow Goose Parade

In my area (eastern Ontario) this time of year usually heralds the comings and goings of huge flocks of Canada Geese, but this year it's Snow Geese that are everywhere. Teeming flocks of the beautiful white birds have been on the move, in enormous numbers! This spectacle has been going on for the past 3 days, and we've been enjoying every minute! Last evening we were outside, hanging our Christmas lights to the cacophony of goose music overhead. The parade of Snow Geese seemed endless, as flock…See More
