Ooh, that sounds like a cool (sensu slang, not temp.) environment! Hope the dryness works in your favor vis-a-vis vermin.

Thanks Diane, We live at 5500 ft. In the high desert of southern Utah. It is dryer than MI but perhaps not colder. We will keep an eye out for mites! David and Robyn

If you can get a close look at the nest, you might check for parasites.  For years (more like decades), I never touched our barn swallows' nests, and they renested and fledged a brood or two (ususally) in the same spot each year. …

thanks Dwayne, The barn swallows had two broods of 4 each and we could look out a window and watch it all happen because of where the nest is located. We hope to see them again this summer! David

A Barn Swallow makes the cup shaped nest of mud attached to the side of a building or on the beam of a barn.  I'd say not to clean it out or off.  I'm pretty sure they add to the nest and would be a lure for more to…

It looks ugly, but I live alone in the woods and feed heavily. I put chicken wire ( hexagonal wire fencing) in front of my picutre windows and rarely have any fatalities. It was my last resort, nothing else worked.

Fifty percent of birds that hit windows die, often after flying off. They can get hematomas or other serious injuries that end up killing them. Stickers are most effective when they're placed close together--no more than about the span of a…

I used to have that problem but then we put up some bird stickers  of chickadees and now we have only about one bird hit the window every 6 months. Even when a bird hits the window we go out and see if one will die soon an if one is in danger…

Keeping birds from hitting windows

We live beside Capitol Reef NP at 5,500 ft. We have Golden Fenches and Junkos that winter with us. We have hung streamers outside the two large windows that these birds tend to hit but we still are killing a bird every few days. We feed the birds away from the house but that does not stop them from hitting the windows. Any thoughts?David and RobynSee More
