Yahuda, You are obviously correct about the 500mm with a 1.4x extender being 700mm, but I was referring to the 500mm with on a 7D giving you 800mm.

I concur with Cody's evaluation of the 300 with and without the TC but obviously it is not the same as the 500

All the photogs I talked to wont be letting their older 500 f4 IS go for cheap. Most are currently selling for around 7k with the lowest side I've seen at 6 and some change. They retail for just over 6k, or they did when they were in production. The new IS ii version that is coming out at some point in time (was supposed to be released in December, that didnt happen) is going to retail at 10.5k, this will drive the cost of the original lens up as it already has, unless Canon steps backs and realizes that the new lens is NOT worth 10.5k to the average prosumer, the original f4 IS will still sell used for anywhere from 6-8k, with ultimately abused lenses with fungi going for 3-5k. Sad day. On another note Maria, check out the 300mm F4L IS lens, great lens that can be had for just over a grand. Add a 1.4x Teleconverter Mk ii for around 300, and you'll have a 420mm Prime lens @ f5.6, which is sharp wide open. This is my current set up and it did wonders for me in Panama recently.

Don,

500 and 1.4 extender give 700 mm not 800 mm.

The crop factor of 7D is 1.6 not 0.6.

Maria, The 500mm f4 L IS is a great lens. With the .6 crop factor on the 7D that gives you 800mm. With the new version of the 500mm about to hit the market, there should be a lot of used 500's available soon. In fact I may be selling mine.

The 500 has been my primary lens for years. Check my site to see what it can do.

My web site.

Maria, I shoot with a 7d - my two favorite birding lenses are a 500mm f4 and a 300mm f4.  What would you like to know about the 7d?
