Western Scrub Jay - What does a rapid clicking sound mean?

Hi WeLoveBird.org members: We had a question posed to us on our twitter site (@weluvbirds). When a Western Scrub Jay makes a rapid clicking sound, what does that mean? Who can help? Best, Susan

According to the Birds of North America Online, the rattle, a "prolonged series of loud, rapid, staccato clicks given at irregular intervals," is produced solely by female, usually while perched. She usually bobs her body while her bill is pointed upward and her tail is closed and pointed down. This call is associated with territorial display, in response to the territorial display by mate.
Thank you! I'll pass it on. Susan
