ok thres this bird..i still havnt identified it ...anyway...this bird comes to my sunflower hopper feeder and its just sits and eats every once in a while but the weird part is it stays in the same spot for 30 min to 45 min at a time and its not alert like the other birds and the other day i was able to get a few inches away from it before it flew away..if i can catch it should i bring it to the vetrinary hospital to see if they can give it meds to help it? or should i just leave it??

When they get this disease they like to stay close to feed and water for fear of not being able to find them again especially if the disease gets worse which it always does. This is a typical finch disease, house finches and goldfinch alike and they will die eventually but in the meantime they are infecting others and the feeders and bird baths. I try my best to capture mine and take them as far away from the feeders as possible and then scrub them down. Good luck.
I feel that Jan is right for the most part. Where we differ is the catching it part. That's because I can't imagine catching a bird. I have experienced this with a House Finch and a Northern Mockingbird. In both cases, it was hard to watch. I recommend that you take your feeders down for two weeks. It could be worse: cats and hawks.

You're good, really good.., ...in more ways than one, and I hope your vet gets that female House Finch back to good health.

Permalink Reply by Stu Yellams on February 11, 2012 at 8:55pm Yes, certainly a Pine Siskin, it's tough, by the time you can catch them it's often too late. Did it have any eye infection? I don't see any sign on the photos.
