Is this a bird or an insect?

Can anyone tell me if this is a bird or an insect (I believe it is the latter, but one never knows)? It was sent to me by a friend, who lives in a very urban area (the trees practically grow on the sidewalks!) in Montreal (QC, Canada). He can hear this rather loud critter in his courtyard.
