Hope you see this, Robert. I didn't want to hijack Rebecca Wilson's discussion, but saw you tout this camera in that thread and wanted to hear more. I've been seriously considering this model. I'd also love to hear from anyone else who has experience with it.

My first camera was a small Fuji-then canon SX10-SX20-SX30-now SX40=
I think it's the better of the 4,I've only been into birding about 3 yrs I guess-
it has tracking, which it great for flying birds, also if your zooming in on a subject,
and you lose it,press and hold a button, zoom returns back to normal,re-locate
subject in photo square, release button, zoom goes back to full, with subject in
photo square=It has a mode called "Vivid color",I think it's great coloration for
Autumn or anything for really great bright colors=check it out at canon.com=
Good Luck and Happy Birding=
Permalink Reply by Amy on January 22, 2012 at 12:11pm Hi Diane, I'm thrilled with the SX40 HS. I used a Canon S3IS for years and searched high and low for a replacement when it started to go wonky. I was looking for a "super-zoom" point-and-shoot, and I tried four others before finding this one. The first photos I took with the camera are here: http://www.magnificentfrigatebird.com/blog/testing-a-new-camera-wit..., along with a sample video and the list of other cameras that didn't pass muster. Most of the photos on my Flickr account were taken with this camera: http://www.flickr.com/photos/magnificentfrigatebird/. I use the camera when I go out birding; I feel it stands up to somewhat rough handling very well. I wanted a camera with a large zoom range that I didn't have to mess with too much to get decent photos for my blog. The Canon SX40 HS is exactly what I was looking for and I just love it!
Permalink Reply by Diane Garlick on January 23, 2012 at 1:15am Robert and Amy, thank you very, very much! As you might have imagined, I'd already come pretty close to talking myself into this camera, and such enthusiasm from fellow birders pretty much seals the decision.
Robert, thank you for the tips about special features to look for; those sound most helpful!
Amy, I'd be thrilled to get pics the quality of yours. Do you do much in the way of post-processing? I'm also happy to have discovered your blog and website.
Thanks again!
Permalink Reply by Amy on January 23, 2012 at 8:28am Diane, I do put my photos through Photoshop. For some reason I have a hard time taking pictures even with the horizon so I have to straighten them out. :o) Other than that I might brighten them up a bit or adjust the contrast, but I don't do a whole lot of post-processing (not a lot of Photoshop skill here). Glad to help and thank you for the kind words. :o)
